Milli Tharana a été adopté officiellement en mai 2006. Selon l'article 20 de la constitution de l'Afghanistan, « L'hymne national de l'Afghanistan doit être en Pashto avec la mention “Dieu est le plus grand” et citer les noms des ethnies présentes en Afghanistan ». Les paroles ont été écrites par Abdul Bari Jahani et la musique par l'allemand-afghan Babrak Wassa.
